“Training of dedicated lifeboat crews must be supported," emphasized the board of the g. Reanima® Help Foundation. "The foundation will support the training with theoretical and practical expertise on site."
From 28 to 31 October 2023, the surf rescue training organized by the DLRG local groups Uetersen and Luebeck took place on the Danish island of Rømø. Using the so-called IRBs (inflatable rescue boats), a total of 22 course participants were able to train their driving skills under realistic conditions and also expand their knowledge and skills for subsequent first aid on the beach.
A few weeks before starting, our foundation was contacted by the organization team of the surf rescue training with the request whether the training could be supported professionally on site. At the same time, practical experience in the field of maritime emergency medicine was to be shared with the participants. After presenting the exact concept of the course to the foundation's board, the decision was made that our foundation would support the further training of the volunteer lifeboat crews as part of this event by providing the theoretical and practical know-how of an expert in this field.
The participants ranged from qualified first aiders to emergency physicians. On the first day of the multi-day training course, Mr. Burkert used case studies to pass on experience from the broad spectrum of maritime medicine to the participants. On the next day, as part of the team of instructors, he used scenario-based training stations to teach how to act quickly and safely for the benefit of the rescued individual. Potential further dangers for the rescued person and the crew were also addressed. A further focus of training was on situational awareness of the trainees, taking into account their own skills and their development.
